To support the rollout of new FOGO and glass bins across Victoria, the City of Ballarat needed a smarter way to keep residents in the loop.
Enter the Ballarat Waste App: A digital-first solution replacing outdated mail-outs with real-time updates and easy-to-access waste information.
Available via their mobile app and online website, Ballarat City Council has halved the cost of their annual print and postage bill and given residents instant answers at their fingertips.
“It’s so much easier just to be able to update any new information for residents on the app rather than have to change all your documents that you’ve got online. That’s a lot of work and I now save so much time.”
Michelle Huie, Circular Economy Project Officer
Before launching the app, Ballarat Council mailed printed waste calendars and tip vouchers to every household each year. The process was expensive, time-consuming, and difficult to update.
The council’s goal was to simplify service delivery, reduce operational costs, and move away from reliance on print by introducing a smarter digital solution.
Our custom council app offered the perfect solution: a digital platform that makes it easy for residents to find bin schedules, recycling info, and service alerts at their fingertips.
It’s now the default waste communication channel across Ballarat, with ongoing plans to expand to digital vouchers.
From personalised reminders to instant updates, the Ballarat Waste App is packed with practical tools:
Bin Day Calendar – See exactly which bin to put out, with address-specific schedules.
Push Notifications – Alert residents to last-minute changes like transfer station closures
A–Z Recycling Guide – Eliminate confusion with a searchable, easy-to-follow directory, helping residents sort waste correctly and reduce contamination.
Service Request Forms – Report missed or damaged bins with just a few taps.
Transfer Station Info – Quickly find locations, maps, and opening hours.
Instant updates – All information is updated on their website too, so all residents can stay up to date.
“The A to Z guide—people often say they really love that. They look at it quite a lot.”
Michelle Huie, Circular Economy Project Officer
The rollout of FOGO and glass bins across Victoria meant Ballarat Council needed to reach over 121,000 residents with clear, timely waste information. Managing this level of change using traditional print methods would have been slow, costly, and resource-intensive.
By introducing the Ballarat Waste App, the council unlocked a smarter way to communicate. The app has significantly reduced admin demands, allowed real-time updates, and delivered ongoing cost savings year after year.
Key Outcomes:
Ongoing operational savings – printing and postage costs cut in half annually
Faster updates – content changes made instantly in-app and on-site
Time saved on admin – council teams spend significantly less time managing and updating waste communications
Consistent brand experience – Digital tools tailored to match the council’s visual identity and style
From collection reminders to reliable recycling info, the Ballarat Waste App provides a seamless experience for its residents.
Ballarat’s success shows how going digital can reduce admin, streamline communication, and deliver real value to residents.
